Stay: Wildcomfort in South Devon

September is our go-to month for a getaway. You have the benefit of warmer days with beaches and towns taking a well-deserved breather after the dizzy heights of summer. This year we looked for somewhere a little different. Our criteria were simple: a place to relax and recharge where we could switch off for a few days. And we found just that at Wildcomfort in South Devon.

The Birdhouse

Wildcomfort is an off-grid site perched high above a Victorian planted garden overlooking Blackpool Sands. Two birdhouses, a Lookout tent and BYOB communal kitchen sink into the woodland creating a one-of-a-kind experience.

We stayed in the Honey Buzzard birdhouse. A small, yet perfectly formed cabin with everything you need for a relaxing break: a small sink, gas hob and worktop, Yeti cooler for storing drinks, and a catetiere and mugs for that all important morning coffee. Not forgetting a bio-fuel fireplace, linen bedding, changing robes, recycled throws, a torch and high-vis belt for late night walks to the pub.

The cabin also makes the most of its incredible position with a huge round window looking out across the treetops towards Start Point.

It was easy to slip into the off-grid way of life with the rustling canopy overhead and the sound of birdsong as our alarm clock. We instantly connected to our surroundings, immersing ourselves in nature. We were also aware of the resources we were using with the cabins being completely off-grid, utilising the sun and rain to power our stay.

We decided to eat out during our visit, but the site has a fully fitted, BYOB communal kitchen called The Captain’s Cabin. Here you’ll find a bar area with gas hobs, Yeti coolers, a wood burner and wood fired pizza oven. You can also purchase a pizza-making kit so you have everything you need to cook under the stars.

Another great plus for Wildcomfort is that it’s intentionally imbedded into the local community. The owners (Lou and Tim) have sourced discounts from several local businesses, encouraging guests to support local during their stay.

The Location

Blackpool Sands beach is at the bottom of the meandering path through the Victorian garden, so is perfect for breakfast, lunch or a takeaway on the beach. It’s a destination hub for anyone who loves Devon beach life, with a Red Paddle shop and a beach sauna for those looking for a new experience.

We breakfasted overlooking the beach watching a storm in the distance and the rain make its way to shore. We opted for the Beach Breakfast on both days which was delicious and kept us full all day.

You’ll find lots of great recommendations for places to eat out nearby within the cabin. One of our favourite meals was at The Tower Inn in Slapton, a real find and one we will return to again. It’s one of those cosy Devon pubs where you feel instantly at home. Snug corners, candles, the works. The chefs are currently cooking in an outdoor kitchen while their main kitchen is refurbished, which means you can say hello to the chef as you walk into the pub. We opted for steak frites and a beef burger, both cooked to perfection.

We weren’t blessed with the Indian summer we’d hoped for, but we still made the most of the dry spells and spent our days exploring Torcross, Beesands and Dartmouth. I honestly think the storms and wild weather made our stay even more special. Where better to get cosy, reconnect and enjoy a few days away from it all.
