Discover Chagford
Chagford is an ancient Stannary town on the edge of Dartmoor, not far from Okehampton and Moretonhampstead, packed full of history, independent boutiques, artists’ studios and numerous cafes and pubs. For a small town, it really does have it all.
Shopping
Now, I know Dartmoor isn’t renowned for its shops, but Chagford has a few treats in store. There’s a fantastic florist that brightens up the town, a butcher, baker, deli, reclaimed second hand shop and wine shop to name just a few. One of the oldest, the local hardware store, can trace its roots back to 1862. I’d deify anyone not to find what they were looking for in Bowdens, it has everything you could ever want.

Casa Magnolia stocks a wonderful range of modern clothing to suit all shapes and sizes. They’re a friendly bunch and will help you find exactly what you’re looking for in a relaxed atmosphere; my mother-in-law loves it! You can also view a selection of their stock online.
If you love all things vintage, then you’ll love 30 The Square. It showcases elegant antiques alongside a mix of new gift ranges from local producers, as well as children’s clothing and toys, cards and gift wrap.

Food & Drink
Whether you’re looking for a morning coffee, a pub lunch or an evening meal somewhere special, you’ll find the perfect place. There are four pubs, four cafes and a delicatessen. So much choice! We treated ourselves to breakfast at The Old Forge Caffe & Restaurant, and what a treat it was.

We started with a smooth coffee in gorgeous little glass cups. We both opted for the English breakfast for £7.80 – butcher’s sausage & bacon, two free range eggs, grilled tomato, mushroom and baked beans, not forgetting toast and two delicious pots of marmalade. It was one of the best breakfasts I’d had in a long time, well served and perfectly cooked.

Arts & Crafts
Chagford has always attracted artists and creative imaginations, so if you’re looking for inspiration, you won’t be disappointed. There’s a wonderful leather studio called Artisans, stocking fantastic local pottery, paintings, jewellery and turned wood. You can also wander around Eleanor Ludgate’s gallery, which houses her fine wildlife paintings.

There’s always something going on in the town and surrounding area, including Chagstock, the local film festival and open mic nights. Whenever you choose to visit, you’ll be treated to a great day out.
